Suggestopedia: Use Your Brain And Follow Your Heart

Knowledge is joy and can be achieved with ease of play without fatigue and tension. How is this possible? Thanks to the method of suggestopedia helping you to learn quick, easy and enjoyable and to absorb many times larger quantity of material in comparison to conventional training methods.

What is Suggestopedia

Suggestopedia is a pedagogical learning system that combines knowledge of medicine, psychology and pedagogy.

Suggestopedia is a system for efficient learning that stimulates simultaneouslyintellectual activity, emotions and physical condition of the personin a positive and spontaneous way, without stress, strain or fatigue, through mental relaxation and unstressed concentration and by using art.

In suggestopedia serious attention is given to the promotion and development of the potential for absorption of information, the so-called reserves of the human personality that are hidden in every individual. Their unlocking contributes to much more quick and efficient learning (3 to 5 times faster thanintraditional education), and high durability of the acquired knowledge. To reach these „reserves" and to use their potential for learning a very conducive learning environment is created: using a lot of games and interactive methods of learning, classical music and masterpieces of classical art , encouraging the " peripheral " perception to memorize information.

7 basic principles (laws) of suggestopediea

Love. Not sentimental love, but love for the human being. Caring support of the teacher offered carefully to the students. Care that they willingly accept, because it is not forced upon them so they feel secure. In terms of positive emotions, the creative intellectual activity and globalized learning process is characterized by a lack of fatigue. The principle of joy and concentrative peace is applied through a system of games and laughter, through visuals, which are not that illustrative, but rather stimulating in nature, as well as the overall organization of the educational process.

Freedom. Freedom allows the teacher to exercise its discretion and to make decisions, to be able to adapt suggestopedical system to the personal characteristics of each group. Freedom allows studentsto choose whether to participate in some activities , such as songs, games, etc., which may not appeal to their disposition. At any moment, they are absolutely free to leave the room as long as theydo not interfere with the work of the group. Freedom allows the learner to listen to theirinner voice and to choose their own path to the reserves of the mind at different moments of the learning process. Freedom is not dictated by the teacher, it is spontaneous feeling in the student who learns.

The conviction ofthe teacher that something unusual is happening. The attitude of the teacher that something unusual is happening and his/her belief in the exceptional abilities of the students resonate in them and lead to unlocking the reserve potential. The state of confidence that something unusual is happening is leading to a state of inspiration in the teacher. Expectations of theteacher relate to his/her own ability to activate the reserves of the students as well as the ability of students to learn on a reserve level. These expectations are felt by students through peripheral perceptions and subconscious signals that are broadcast by the voice, facial expressions and all non verbal behavior of the teacher. Due to the authenticity of these signals and the inability of the teacher to play them, students perceive them without hesitation. This automatically leads to the unlocking of reserves.

Repeatedly increased learning material.

Material at work through Suggestopedia is mandatory repeatedly increased to that used in conventional methods. The methods have a psychotherapeutic, psychoprophylactic , psyhohygienic and educational effect .

The principle: Whole – Part, Part – Whole; Part through the Whole.

When we teach there should be no separation between the elements and the whole. Elements should not be taught and studied in isolation.

For example, language is a whole. It is neither grammar nor vocabulary only. As our brain perceives the surrounding world in its entirety, rather than as a collection of separate entities, so it apprehends the language as harmonious living organism. Therefore, its elements are always learned in the context of the whole, in the semantic relationship between them, rather than as separate grammatical or lexical units. Each whole is generally part of a larger whole. The letter is part of the word, the word - part of the sentence, the sentence – part of the text and all together they constitute the complex meaning that human beings perceive.

The golden proportion.

The golden proportion reveals the law of harmony in the universe, which every suggestopedic process must be subjected to. Harmony creates harmony and overcomes mental chaos, often provoked by traditional pedagogy. Harmony is a major factor in teaching and learning this great tutorial for a short period of time. Relationships between parts and the whole are in golden proportion in the suggestopedic communication process. Learning ability is improved when the process of learning cleverly finds the right balance between rhythms, intonations, emotional stimuli, etc.

Application of Classical art and Aesthetics .

Classical art and aesthetics are used in suggestopedia as particularly effective mediators of non-manipulative communicative suggestion. The reason lies in their ability to emit countless nonspecific stimuli that nurture the abundance of peripheral perceptions, imperceptible to consciousness.

Suggestopedic art creates conditions for optimal psycho-relaxation and harmony, which help to create a spontaneously increased susceptibility and to boost the capacity to tap the reserves of the mind in a pleasant atmosphere. This art helps to reach a state of inspiration and to divert the attention from the "affected area" where there is fear associated with learning. Classical art is introduced as a special selection of classical music, songs and arias, literary works, reproductions of masterpieces of art, etc.

Results of the Suggestopedic learning process :

• Unlocking of the intellectual, creative, memory reservesof the human person.

• Training is always accompanied by the effect of relaxation.

• Always observed increased emotional toneof the personality.

• Release from the fear of learningand encouraging constant thirst for knowledge.

• Always have a beneficial educational effect, mitigates aggressive tendenciesof the characterof the students and helps them adjust to society.

• Training is accompanied by significant psychoprophylactic and psychotherapeutic effect.

• At the physiological level, the immune system of the body is strenghtenedduring and after the process of perception of repeatedly increased material.

History of suggestopedia

Suggestopediaisa pedagogical science created by Bulgarian scientist Professor Dr. GeorgiLozanov- doctor, psychiatrist and brain physiologist. The term was first published in 1965 in Bulgarian and in 1967 in English. The science has spreadworldwide over the past 50 years. Suggestopedia was founded in the 70s by Professor Dr. Georgi Lozanov and the next decade wasrecognized by an international committee of UNESCO as"a superior method of learning for many subjects and many groups of students."
